GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The purpose of the project is to develop 3 techniques for the separation and recovery of rare earth metals from leach liquors in the Swedish mining industry. The work will be performed at the Department of Chemistry and the Department of Chemical Science and Engineering at KTH and at IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute. The competence in the project will span from knowledge in basic inorganic chemistry via applied chemical engineering science to application near process development. The techniques that will be developed are crystallization/precipitation, chromatographic separations and supported liquid membrane extraction. The most promising technique will be tested in pilot scale at IVL. The project will finance 3 PhD students that will be working in close cooperation with all the 3 partners. There will be regular meetings of the partners and yearly seminars with invited participants from related industry and associations to discuss and disseminate the knowledge accumulated in the project.
