GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Tauw was commissioned by the GOM (Gewestelijke Ontwikkelingsmaatschappij) to perform an extensive descriptive soil investigation on the illegal Cargovil dumping ground, including the former municipal domestic dump of Grimbergen and several other areas containing other waste materials. Several contamination cores were investigated and defined in size, horizontally and vertically proving to contain hazardous pollutants like phenols, cresols, benzene, polyaromatic hydrocarbons and pesticides. Different drilling techniques were used regarding the type of waste materials. Also gas measurements were done in the domestic waste material zone and risks for public health and spread to the groundwater were assessed.
For the site as a whole, a “decision tree” was made up to divide the site into several zones that can be used to develop new industrial activities. Hereby the necessary precautions were taken into account. In a subsequent phase supplementary soil investigations were executed, hereby the contamination situation was further mapped and analyzed.
