Since 2008, Arche and Eurometaux developed the MeClas tool that is able to characterize the hazard of complex inorganic materials based on the hazard of the elemental constituents and/or their speciation and/or their bio-availability:
Tool for the classification of complex inorganic materials (e.g. Ores and Ore Concentrates, Slags, Alloys).
Derivation of GHS-based classification according to the latest scientific and regulatory principles.
Up-to-date underlying database containing the most recent classification of substances (official and self-classifications).
MeClas can be used for a wide range of regulatory purposes such as ADR and IMO-related provisions (MARPOL, IMDG, IMSBC). Tiered approach; level of refinement depends on the amount of available information for the material (elemental analysis, mineralogy, speciation, bioavailability).
The web-based tool was originally developed for the purpose of CLP and is a good basis for hazard characterisation of low grade ores and waste materials.
