GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Closing the Circle (CtC) is the first project to implement Enhanced Landfill Mining (ELFM) in practice. CtC deals with the valorization of the landfill of Remo Milieubeheer nv in Houthalen-Helchteren (Belgium), which contains both household and industrial waste. CtC targets the integrated optimization of materials and energy recovery, while bringing the final residue volume to almost zero and mitigating the CO2 emissions with various techniques. The present EFRO project used the CtC case to demonstrate that it is feasible to mine landfills and valorize the excavated streams as materials and energy. Moreover, the ELFM concept was introduced and discussed to support decision making of both governments and businesses.

PROJECT GOALS
  • Demonstrate that the integrated valorisation of landfills as materials and energy is possible.
  • Allow companies to demonstrate their technologies.
  • Demonstrate that a multi-actor approach is required to take away non-technical barriers.
FUNDING TYPE: EU EFRO D2 (Demonstration and dissemination)
BUDGET: € 500.000
SUBSIDY: € 200.000 (from EFRO)
