RESEARCH RELATED TO SUSTAINABLE USE OF NATURAL RESOURCES

The mission of CERENA, a Research Center of Técnico/Ulisboa, is to host research carried out at the highest excellence level, related to the sustainable use of natural resources, including energy, as well as their impact on the environment. CERENA aims at using an approach that is simultaneously integrative, multidisciplinary and multi-scale approach, going from the molecular level up to the planetary scale, where researchers with different backgrounds converge on the same objectives.

CERENA develops research on three main scientific application areas – Raw Materials, Environment and Energy – with three main strategic thematic strands – Oil&Gas, Evaluation&Valorization of Resources and, Natural&Technological Hazards.

Within the framework of CERENA, research on secondary raw materials is developed through the application of mineral processing techniques, hydrometallurgical and bio- hydrometallurgical processes to recycle, reuse and recover basic metals, high-tech metals, plastics and glass from landfills, tailings and mining wastes, or waste in general in a more efficient and sustainable way; on the development and valorisation of new materials environmentally friendly or/and with economic and innovative potential; on development waste-to-energy processes; on the development of methods to monitor, model and control environmental impacts due to technological hazards.

Welcome to EURELCO

EURELCO is an open, quadruple helix network that supports the required technological, legal, social, economic, environmental and organisational innovation with respect to the development and implementation of a Dynamic Landfill Management (DLM) framework. The DLM framework includes resource recovery-driven Enhanced Landfill Mining (ELFM) as one of its most advanced components, thereby supporting the transition to a resource efficient, circular, low-carbon economy. Are you a relevant actor working on DLM or ELFM?
