GENERAL DESCRIPTION

In this project, based on a theoretical estimation of the amount and composition of materials present at the REMO landfill site in Houthalen-Helchteren (Belgium), a validation and refinement of these data was made through a thorough characterisation of materials obtained by sampling from the landfill site. By this characterisation, the valorisation potential of the materials in the landfill could be estimated.

The following results were obtained:

  • Refining of the logbook data from the REMO landfill through correction for the (measured) moisture content and degradation of organic material over time.

  • On-site sampling by excavation and analysis of over 130 samples for grain-size distribution, material content, elemental composition, calorific value, etc. .The obtained data could be analysed as a function of the age and depth of storage at the landfill.

  • Properties of the waste through thorough analyses (see above) and estimation of a mass balance of the materials present in the landfill.

  • Mapping of the valorisation potential of the recovered materials.

PROJECT GOALS
  • Control the reliability of the existing inventory of the REMO landfill.

  • Estimate the valorisation potential by means of recycling or thermal treatment of the materials in the landfill.

  • Define research needs to increase the valorisation potential of certain material(s) (fractions).
