GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Towards Sustainable Waste Management was an interdisciplinary research programme dedicated to investigating policy instruments and strategic decisions that can contribute to developing waste management in a more sustainable direction.

Towards Sustainable Waste Management:

  • Surveys existing as well as potential policy instruments.

  • Develops future scenarios illustrating how a more sustainable waste management can be designed.

  • Investigates systems for source separation and collection aiming to develop knowledge that is needed to adapt these systems to consumers, organisations and companies.

  • Investigates the processes of the recycling industry aiming to improve their environmental performance

The project was a multidisciplinary effort involving ten institutes in Sweden. KTH was mainly involved in:

  • Developing suggestions for policy.

  • Assessing environmental impacts of different policy proposals.

  • Analysing how efficient systems can be designed from a users perspective.

  • Analysing the potential of improved recycling processes.

  • Developing future scenarios.
