GENERAL DESCRIPTION

In 2014, THV (Tauw – Witteveen+Bos) was assigned by OVAM to study the preconditions necessary for Enhanced Landfill Mining. Main goal was to concretize and further investigate these preconditions. The following aspects of ELFM were investigated:

  • The role and possible contribution of dumping grounds as source for nutrients.

  • The relevance and calorific value as additional standard for estimating the potential of LFM.

  • The need and demand for critical materials worldwide and the possible contribution that dumping grounds can offer to this.

  • Dumping grounds and alternative ways of energy supply.

  • Green and sustainable soil remediation on dumping grounds.

  • Refinement of the ELFM database in Flanders.

  • Follow-up and reporting of findings when excavating dumping grounds with attention for separation and valorization techniques.
