GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The objectives of this national research project were to:

Get hands-on experiences on surveying material contents of landfills

Estimate material potential in Finnish MSW landfills

To form preliminary estimates on business potential related to landfill mining in Finland (and abroad)

To create abilities to start company driven pilot- or demonstration projects
The “heart” of the project project consisted of two case studies on MSW landfills of different ages. Large scale sampling was executed with hydraulic piling rig machinery up to depth of 30 meters. Also full scale mechanical pre-treatment along with manual sorting and sample characterization was performed for the waste samples lifted to the ground. In the latter case study geo-electrical methods were tried as part of the exploration stage in assessing the material contents of a landfill.
PROJECT GOALS
To form first estimates of the most essential drivers and business potential in LFM for Finnish companies.
