GENERAL DESCRIPTION

In 2012 THV (Tauw – Witteveen+Bos) started the first phase of a framework contract for technical support on Landfill Mining commissioned by OVAM (Openbare Vlaamse Afvalstoffenmaatschappij).

Within this first phase several different assignments were completed:

• Inventarisation of possible criteria for assessing the real potential of LFM, resulting in 4 main objectives on which specific criteria were put against to. Eventually a calculation methodology was developed so the “relative” potential for these 4 main objectives could be calculated. Resulting in the possibility to prioritize the potential of a dumping ground.

• Development of a methodology to determine the remediation necessity for dumping grounds. In this case also a calculation tool was developed. This tool was then coupled to the LFM potential calculation methodology to have a ranking on dumping grounds based upon a combination of the LFM potential and their remediation necessity.

• Applying this calculation tool to a small database of dumping grounds. The tool will eventually be applied on a larger database.

• An overview on known alternative investigation techniques.
